The First Science

The First Science Project is a programme of research by Douglas J. Huntington Moore, an independent researcher in Brisbane, Australia. The author has worked on it full time since January 2010. It began as a book, The First Science and the Generic Code, and is now a corpus of papers, supplementary books and computational verification packages.

The subject is the Generic Entity, a single entity of wholly undetermined character, taken before number, order or any distinguished element has been admitted. The calculus worked out from it, the First Calculus, is qualitative. The quantitative calculus, the mathematics of number, measurement and rate of change, has carried the sciences for about three centuries, and the First Calculus is a complementary mathematics of organisation, disposition and relation.

It grows from one principle, First-Classness: nothing in a system is intrinsically privileged, so there is no preferred origin, no special container and no external vantage point. From that principle the work derives a qualitative opposition between two ontological types, F (toHave) and M (toBe), and from that opposition the monads and four elementary dyadic types.

The same calculus is applied in other fields: the redundancy architecture of the universal genetic code and codon usage across the tree of life; the safety of memory use in programs; the structure of fundamental particles; and the logic of the syllogism, which the Online Syllogism Solver on this site works through. In the solver a term that is M is distributed and a term that is F is undistributed.

Where to find the work

  • Corpus: the Zenodo Corpus Index (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.18058102), which catalogues the papers, supplementary books and verification packages, and the stage each has reached in publication.
  • About: where the project now stands, in the author’s account.
  • Bio: the author’s earlier career in engineering, research and start-up companies.
  • Online Syllogism Solver: an interactive machine for Aristotle’s categorical syllogisms.
  • 2014 Blog: notes written between 2011 and 2014. The blog stops there.
